“Hey, D. I have Poppy here with me.”

“Hey, guys,” Dante said, sounding utterly exhausted. “First, Poppy, the boys are okay.”

“Thank you.” The relief in Poppy’s voice was palpable. More than anything, Cade wanted to wrap her in a damn bubble so nothing could upset her ever again. “How’s Jackie?”

“She’ll be all right. Luckily, there was no damage to her skull. She has a concussion and about eight stitches on the back of her scalp, so they’re keeping her overnight to be safe.” Dante chuckled. “Man, bro, you should have been there when Jackie found out they shaved the back of her head.”

Cade smiled. He could imagine the ruckus their fiery friend must have made.

At Poppy’s questioning look, he explained, “Jackie is tough as nails. Former Golden Gloves champ. Kick-ass boxer. Excellent trainer and coach.” Talking about the woman who’d become part of their family, he smiled wider. “She’s also the biggest girly girl there is. Loves getting all done up with the lashes, the glitter, the hair.”

“I thought she was going to fucking throw down when the doctor came in.” Dante laughed, but his humor quickly faded.

Cade knew his brother was thinking the exact same thing he was: that they’d come too damn close to losing one of their own.

Bile surged up his throat at the thought of Poppy’s boys getting hurt.

No. Fuck no. They are okay. Jackie will be okay, he told himself. And yet, trepidation still twisted his stomach.

“You know, D, I have a bad feeling about this. With what just happened at the Seattle gym and the shit here with the lights, this feels all kinds of wrong.”

“Yeah. It fucking does.” His brother was quiet for a moment. Then, with a loud sigh, he continued, “I was on the phone with Gavin before I called you. He and Alvarez got word that the fire investigator and SPD ruled it was an explosive device that took down the roof.”

Cade’s ears began ringing. A bomb? Holy. Fuck.

It shouldn’t have surprised him. The possibility had been on all their radars. But it did. It fucking shocked him to the core, like an unexpected one-two punch straight to the chin.

Poppy hugged him tight, and he remembered to breathe. Damn. Her warmth, her empathy, her strength—they all brought his budding panic down a notch.

“For real?” Cade asked when he was finally able to speak.

“Yeah. Alvarez made some calls. SPD wants to meet tomorrow to officially go over the findings.” A noise came through the speaker, like his brother was scrubbing his hands over his face.

“Do you need me with you? I’ll be there.”

“Nah, stay on Hudson. Alvarez said the police don’t have much. They determined it was basically a homemade bomb of some sort, but that’s all they know.”

“What the fuck, D?”

“My sentiments exactly, little bro. By the way, thanks for checking on Rebecca and Roc today. I sure as fuck hate being away from them, so I really appreciate you stopping in.”

“Always, brother.” Rebecca and Rocco were part of his family, and Cade would do everything he could to look out for them, to protect them.
